SMSF statistical information – June 2018

ATO recently published the June 2018 quarterly statistical reports for the SMSF market.

Key statistical insights:

  • The total number of SMSFs stands at almost 600,000 with nearly 1.2 million members.
  • Two thirds of SMSFs have 2 members.
  • The age of individuals who are members of SMSFs is typically between the age catagory of 35 and 84, with slightly higher number of individuals between the age of 55 and 69.
  • The median member balance in a SMSF is almost $393,141 (2017).
  • The median assets held in a SMSF is almost $693,265 (2017).
  • Approximately 80% of SMSFs are located in the eastern states of Australia.
  • Total assets held by SMSFs was $772 billion. Securities listed on an Australian exchange and cash/ term deposits represents 60% of all SMSF assets.

Asset allocation by SMSF:

Total assets held by SMSFs was $772 billion. This represents 27.7% of all superannuation assets.

Listed securities on an Australian exchange accounted for 36.5% ($263 billion). Overseas listed securities held by SMSF was less than 1% of total assets.

Cash and term deposits accounted for 24.1% ($174 billion).

Assets held subject to a limited recourse borrowing arrangements – net assets – was 5.4% ($39 billion).

Residential real property represents 5% and non-residential property represents 9.4%.
