Choice of fund

Many employees are entitled to choose the super fund that their employer pays their superannuation contributions into, including to their self managed super fund.

If you are employed, your existing super fund gets a minimum of 9.5 per cent compulsory contribution from your employer as well as any additional contributions you make voluntarily, such as salary sacrifice contributions and peraonal contributions.

Most employers must offer their employees the choice of where their compulsory superannuation is contributed, including to the employee's SMSF. This means that you can ask your current employer to contribute your compulsory superannuation to your SMSF.

Exceptions apply to some Government employees and those covered by State industry awards where superannuation contributions must be paid into specified industry super fund under that award.

Choosing a super fund

You make the choice by providing your employer with the Standard choice form (or a similar document containing the information in the Standard choice form).

You will also need to provide your emloyer with the SMSF's electronic service address (ESA). Please contact us to obtain your SMSF's ESA.
